Exciting changes for CDHP's board

By: Meg Booth

Autumn has ushered in more change than cool weather and falling leaves at the Children’s Dental Health Project. Our Board of Directors has some changing faces, which is exciting for our future, though it is also sad to see long-time CDHP champions step down. I want to announce these transitions with our partners so you can also thank our Directors (current and past) for their support of all we are accomplishing together. For more details, read our news release.

For starters, we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Barbara Shearer as a new director on our board. Dr. Shearer is passionate about the need to address the current inequities in oral health and will be a tremendous addition to our team! Professionally, Dr. Shearer is the Director of Scientific Affairs for Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals. Through this important role, she is responsible for academic programs, professional associations, professional education and public health in North America.

One bittersweet change is the need to say goodbye to three directors who completed their tenure on the board. These individuals include: Dr. Fotinos Panagakos, Michael Labson, and Dr. Caswell A. Evans, Jr. It’s never easy to say goodbye, especially to individuals that brought important insights and diverse perspectives to CDHP. They have led us to make important decisions about our work. But friends of CDHP can never get too far from us; we are already looking for new ways to engage these leaders outside of their board service.

We are grateful for their partnership in defending the dental and medical coverage we long fought to achieve for children, and as we plan for the future.

Last but not least, CDHP elected new officers. Kevin Thomas was elected the new chairman of the board. In addition to being a managing partner at Elevate Oral Care, Kevin has twice been a CDHP board director. He generously gives his time to pediatric dentistry causes, not only CDHP but also, for example, to the Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children Foundation Board of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He has both a huge heart and a lot of savvy — qualities that are just the beginning of a list of reasons why I admire Kevin and his leadership.

CDHP’s Board of Directors also elected a new vice-chair, Laura Smith. Ms. Smith is the former president and CEO of Washington Dental Service Foundation, now known as Arcora Foundation. Under her helm, the organization was well known for its innovative efforts, including its leadership of the Access to Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) program. Laura has been an outspoken advocate of children throughout her career. We are delighted that she has dedicated her time and expertise in her early retirement to CDHP.

Please join me in thanking current and past CDHP Directors. We are grateful for their partnership in defending the dental and medical coverage we long fought to achieve for children, and as we plan for the future. Together we will ensure that families can achieve their dreams free of dental disease.

Bios for all CDHP board members can be accessed elsewhere on our website.
