CDHP State Summary: South Carolina Dental Medicaid

In South Carolina’s Medicaid program, dental care is delivered through a traditional fee-for-service mechanism and is administered by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). In 1998–99, the DHHS and the state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), along with the South Carolina Dental Association, began collaborating together and with other private and public partners to address the state’s oral health access concerns. This collaboration followed a multiyear effort by these same organizations—working as a Medicaid access committee—to improve dentists’ participation in
the program.
