About the Program

The Improving Perinatal and Infant Oral Health Project seeks to promote the oral health of pregnant women and children, and to increase awareness of the importance of perinatal and infant oral health among clinical providers, policymakers, public health officials, and the public.

A collaborative effort of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the Children’s Dental Health Project, the Project works to enhance maternal and child oral health programming across the country at the local, state, and national levels, specifically addressing the need to contribute to various health providers’ knowledge, skills, and practices regarding perinatal and infant oral health.

The three overarching goals of the Project are to:

1. Expand the availability of prenatal oral health care

2. Expand the availability of infant oral health car

3. Raise public awareness regarding the importance of dental care for pregnant women, infants, and young children

The Project is guided by the AAPD Committee on Perinatal and Infant Oral Health.
